You can’t have your video and watch it too, said some old French aristocrat on his way to the chopping block. Truer words were never spoken. In fact, I doubt that they were ever spoken at all. That’s the trouble with the internet — you can’t believe a thing you read or see. It’s not just fake news or photo-shopped graphics; anything that even hints at being real and truthful on the internet, especially social media, is deleted so fast it makes your head drown. People have come to expect nothing but falsehoods from the internet. They pride themselves on finding out the ‘real news’ by listening to the latest gossip at the office, or from commercials between segments of Game of Thrones.
As a final demonstration of this sad state of affairs, I’m going to write something that is absolutely and positively true right here — and I’ll bet you dollars to donuts that hundreds of people will then leave a comment disputing the fact, or calling me a crypto-fascist for making it in the first place. Here goes:
THE SUN RISES IN THE EAST.
Flat Earthers will reject this statement out of hand, of course, calling it nothing but spheroid propaganda. And people who live in lands that are universally called ‘Eastern’ will begin a hue and cry about profiling. Republicans will want to know if this statement has ever been broadcast on FOX News; and Democrats will want to read the full 500 page report from the Sunrise Commission before committing themselves.
The fact of the matter is, now that I read that statement myself on this blog I’m beginning to wonder about it. This may be The Grassy Knoll all over again.
